¡¡¡¡Hangzhou, in the southeast coastal region of the mainland, is located in the Middle-Lower Yangtze River Plain.£¬ It is surrounded by the vast Lake Tai in the north and Qiantang River in the south which is famous for the most fantastic spectacle¡ªQiantang Tide, adjacent to the lush green Tianmu Mountain in the west and around 200 miles away from south Pacific Ocean and East China Sea in the east. Interwoven with rivers, it boasts a convenient transportation, and thus is crowned as ¡°Land of Fish and Rice¡± and ¡°Home of Silk¡±. The city of Hangzhou governs 5 counties including Fuyang, Tonglu, Jiande, Chun¡¯an and Lin¡¯an, as well as 8 districts, namely, Shangcheng, Xiacheng, Xihu, Jianggan, Gongshu, Binjiang, Xiaoshan and Yuhang. It has 33 streets, 139 towns, 95 villages, over 4,000 administrative villages and over 1,000 residential communities. According to the statistics in 2000, it boasts a total population of 6,150,000 in Han, She, Hui, Man and other nationalities including 3,730,000 people living in urban area. Hangzhou people, living in the water country south of the Yangtze River for thousands of years, are intelligent, diligent, brave, unsophisticated, gentle and hospitable.
¡¡¡¡
Hangzhou covers a total area of 16,596 m2, including an urban area of 3,068 m2. The average annual temperature is 16.2oC, and the average annual rainfall is 1,435mm.
¡¡¡¡ Chinese civilization along the Yangtze River originated from Hangzhou. As early as 50,000 years ago, Jiande Man lived in Tianmu mountainous area. In the late period of Zhuo Stone Age, 10,000-20,000 years ago, human beings existed in Hangzhou Plain. In the Liang Zhu Period 4,000 years ago, stone axe, spinning wheel and grain clot, discovered in Shuitianfan of Laoheshan, contributed to the existence of proto-human in the northwest of Hangzhou.
¡¡¡¡ According to historic records, Da Yu (a water harnessing hero in ancient Chinese legend) went to Kuai Ji, currently known as Shaoxian, for a Zhu Hou convention. He landed from the ship here (the Chinese character ¡°º½¡± means ship, and is the homophone of ¡°º¼¡±), and the name ¡°Yuhang (Óíº¼)¡± was achieved, later incorrectly called ¡°Yuhang (Óຼ)¡±. In Spring and Autumn Period, Hangzhou was a dispute between Wu and Yue (Wu and Yue were the two independent countries in Spring and Autumn Period). Later, Emperor Qinshihuang unified six countries, and established Qiantang County at the foot of Lingyin Mountain. He had been here when paying a visit to the east, and the relics of Qinwang Mountain (Emperor Qinshihuang viewing the mountain) and Stone for Emperor Qinshihuang¡¯s Tying Boat were thus left here. In 589, its name was changed into ¡°Hangzhou¡±, and a county was established to govern Jianggan region. In 610, Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty ordered to dig the Jiangnan Great Canal, making it a decisive place in Wu and Yue regions with river and the sea around, which exerted significant influence on the development of economy and culture in Hangzhou. At that time, Hangzhou was extremely famous for the numerous merchants and shops over it, and with its development, Hangzhou, together with Guangzhou and Yangzhou, was listed as the top three trading ports in China. In North Song Dynasty, Hangzhou, surrounded by elegant lakes and overlapped mountains, was the best city in the southeast with a large population.
